Abstract
The purpose of this study is to examine the poetic world of Francisco de Aldana, a Spanish poet in the 16th century, long overlooked in the history of literature, and to illuminate its essence. Aldana was an unlucky poet who was forgotten in the history of Spanish literature after his death, even though he was revered as an outstanding sonnet poet by famous writers of the time. However, interest in him has been sparked since the mid-20th century, and now he is reevaluated as one of the representative poets of the Spanish Renaissance so that is actively studied. Since there are no prior studies on Aldana in Korea yet, this study first introduces Aldana’s life and general characteristics of his works, and attempts to elucidate the distinctive features of his poetry, focusing on his representative sonnets. In general, his poems have been understood as expressing platonic love, but in this study, we would like to focus on the disillusionment and transcendence behind them. Through this, it is intended to clarify the historical significance of Aldana’s poetry as a stepping stone to the transition of Spanish literature from the Renaissance to the Baroque, and eventually to help expand the understanding of the development of Spanish poetry.
