Abstract
Considered to be the world’s first web musical, A Killer Party was designed as an alternative to sustain theatres creatively and financially in the pandemic environment of the COVID-19 era. A Killer Party was produced in quarantine through remote collaborations between actors, musicians, writers, staff, and producers, and was first streamed online through video platforms around the world in August 2020. A Killer Party presents a new theatrical communication model in the post-Corona era, in addition to the historical meaning of the project as the world’s first web musical. This performance carries out a creative strategy of balancing ‘strangeness and familiarity’ by providing scenic attractions that cross the boundaries of parody, homage, and pastiche. In addition, this web musical attempts new possibilities of web-based platform performance by presenting consumer- friendly content in the form of ‘short form’ that actively responds to the tastes and sensibility of the MZ generation. In a pandemic environment where social distancing and non-face-to-face contact are prioritized, A Killer Party presents a new alternative to ‘untact/on-tact’ performance production and communication with the audience, breaking down the barriers of time and place. Lastly, A Killer Party project suggests the ‘new normal’ and direction of theatre production, supply, and distribution in the post-Corona era by unveiling the potential of web musical as an independent theatre genre or content and the possibility of market diversification.
