벨라스케스의 회화와 문학의 상관성: 바로크 미학의 표출 양상을 중심으로

문학과 회화는 오랜 시간 동안 인접성을 지닌 채 상호관련성을 이어왔다. 시각적 대상을 글로 묘사하는 글쓰기 방법인 ‘에크프라시스’ 개념은 그 기원을 이룬다. 나아가 두 분야의 유 사성은 다른 예술보다 문학과 회화가 현실 반영에 더 적합한 성격을 갖고 있다는 측면에서 찾아볼 수 있다. 바로크 시대는 서로 다른 요소 사이의 공존과 충돌로 인해 복합적이고 다층 적인 현실이 존재했었고, 그런 만큼 문학과 회화는 그러한 현실을 반영하기 위해 역동적으로 대응하였다. 따라서 이 시기에 두 분야 간의 상관성은 더욱 강화되었다고 볼 수 있다. 본 연구 는 그러한 면을 구체적으로 드러내기 위해 바로크의 화가 벨라스케스와 당대의 두드러진 문 학 경향과의 관련성을 살펴보았다. 이를 위해 두 분야에 공통으로 보이는 측면을 대조와 상호 관계성, 시간의 흐름에 대한 신랄한 인식, ‘미장아빔’을 통한 생성의 구조, 모호성의 미학과 감상자의 참여로 구분하여 분석하였다. 이렇게 본 연구는 벨라스케스의 회화와 바로크 문학이 시대적 현실을 예술적으로 형상화 할 때 나타난 공통적인 요소를 탐색하면서 문학과 회화 간의 상관성에 관한 이해의 폭을 넓히 려고 하였다.
Abstract
Literature and painting have been interrelated for a long time. We could say that the concept of ekphrasis, the description of visual artworks in writing, constitutes its origin. On the other hand, both literature and painting seem to share and some apparent superiority in portraying reality when compared to other artistic disciplines. The Baroque period revealed complex and multi-layered realities through the coexistence and opposition of different elements, and as such, literature and painting proved to be very suitable vehicles to present a dramatic response to reflect such realities. In fact, it can be noticed that the correlation between these two artistic disciplines was further strengthened during this period. In order to reveal this aspect in detail, this study examines the relationship between the works by Velázquez, a Baroque painter, and some prominent literary trends of the time. To this end, aspects that seem common in both artistic disciplines are analyzed by dividing them into ‘contrast and interrelationship’, ‘acute perception of the passage of time’, ‘structure of generation through mise en abyme’, and ‘the aesthetics of ambiguity and the viewer’s participation’. Accordingly, the present study tries to broaden the range of understanding of the correlation between Baroque literature and painting while exploring how they are used to artistically embody the reality of the era by analyzing the common elements that appear in both Velázquez's paintings and literary works of that period.
