Abstract
The pícaro is a literary archetype which appeared at a time when the medieval theocentric vision was giving way to anthropocentrism, which brought man’s daily life, usually absent from medieval works, into the center of literature. The present study explores how this literary archetype played also a important role as inspiration for painters and how they portrayed it in their paintings. First, we examine those aspects used in literature and painting to capture everyday’s reality as subject matter, and then explore certain features of the pícaro extracted from the novels Lazarillo de Tormes, Guzmán de Alfarache and El Buscón, along with some of the traces that literary pícaros seem to have left in the paintings of the 17th century Spanish painters Rivera, Velázquez and Murillo. To this end, the portrayal of the pícaro is analyzed by contrasting its characterization in the novels and its pictorial depiction, the visual representation of the so-called ‘hunger narratives’ and the pícaro’s anti-normative nature and modern individualism. Additionally, this study tries to explore the relation existing between literature and painting as tools to portray the reality of the times from a broader perspective while examining the visual depiction of literary archetypes and its limitations.
