Abstract

Even in the period when realism became the main keynote of literature, romance still acted as a key element of modern novels. This shows that novels and romance contributed to the formation of modern novels in a complementary rather than mutually exclusive manner. From the late 18th century to the mid-19th century, Romanticism emerged as a reaction against the strict norms of classicism, seeking to explore an idealized, transcendent world. Then, in the mid-19th century, it underwent a transition from idealistic and sentimental romanticism to realism, which sought to address real-world problems amid the spread of industrialisation, urbanisation and scientific thinking. In historical novels and Western modern masterpieces of realism during this period, we can still capture romantic elements and a romanticism worldview. Such complex and multilayered narratives provide an important impetus for in-depth exploration of the human interior and social reality, and demonstrate the richness of human life and the complexity of literature through the conflict between ideals and reality. In this article, in addition to Cervantes' Don Quixote, the complex narratives of romantic ideals and social reality are captured in the works of Alessandro Manzoni, known as the Italian historical novel I promessi sposi, the French writer Honore de Balzac's Illusions Perdues, known as the realism novel, and the Russian writer Lev Tolstoy's Анна Каренина. These artists have each reflected a romanticism worldview in their works in different ways, while highlighting the tension between the noble aspirations of humans and the constraints of reality.
