Abstract

This study examines the narrative functions of Kianda, a mythological figure transmitted in the capital city of Luanda, Angola, as it appears in literary texts. It aims to demonstrate that Kianda does not remain a fixed mythological figure or symbol, but rather operates as a fluid entity whose meanings are continuously reconfigured through historical experiences and social transformations, thereby organizing both authorial thought and narrative structures. To this end, the study analyzes three Lusophone literary works by Pepetela, Mia Couto, and Raul Lody, focusing on how Kianda functions respectively as a catalyst for ethical judgment, a mediator of religious and cosmological hybridity, and a narrative device that articulates Atlantic mobility and diasporic memory. The analysis shows that Kianda is not confined to a specific local symbolism, but instead functions as a narrative principle that traverses the Lusophone Atlantic world, guiding both writers and readers toward renewed ways of imagining and interpreting the world as an “invisible author.” Through this approach, the study reconsiders the relationship between African mythology, literature, and historical memory from a narrative perspective, and positions Kianda as a key agent of meaning-making that mediates between literary imagination and social experience.
