초록

Ahn Soo‐gil is committed to the writing of a large number of long novels from the mid 1950s. His long novels are largely divided into two groups. One is those having diachronic history as their background like Bukgando, and the other is those having synchronic social reality as their background. As most of the others based on social reality were published serially in newspaper, they did not receive researchers’ response and interest as much as popular novels. However, because the writer has the capacity to look over diachronic history, he deals with synchronic social issues seriously. This study traced changes in Ahn Soo‐gil’s popular novels during the period around the 1960s, focusing on ‘Emotion Colors’ published in Kukjesinbo serially in the 1960s. The biggest difference in long novels between the 1950s and the 1960s is the transition of ethical subjects. In long novels during the 1950s, middle‐age generations appear who represent the writer. Turning the 1960s, however, the ethical subject is changed to ‘youth.’ While reducing older generations’ roles of guidance and mediation, he transfers the role of ethical subjects to the youth. The biggest problem in the youth perceived by Ahn Soo‐gil is excessive emotion, in particular, the excess of passion. In Emotion Colors, he compares young people’s excess of passion with color, and suggests ethical discourses as follows. Young generations, who are future workers, should be able to become ethical subjects by themselves and enjoy freedom through moderation. His ethical consciousness is not an old‐fashioned enlightening discourse but the base of citizenship that should be established in the middle of industrialization and urbanization in the 1960s.
