Abstract
This paper aims to show how Aristotle’s Poetics provides crucial paradigms for contemporary art theory. In order to do it, I induces two codes, imitation code and plot code, that comes from two fundamental semiotic relations respectively, the relation between the signifying and the signified, and the relation among the signifyings. Imitation code is a structural principle dominating the relation between the imitating and the imitated. In this paper, I will show how this code is revealed in Poetics by using Hjelmslev's concepts, expression form and content form. Plot code is a structural principle dominating the relations among the imitating elements, which is mostly focussed in Poetics. In Poetics, the plot occupies the dominant position in hierarchical relations above all other elements and creates a kind of norm for poetics in general. Since some general semiotic perspectives of Poetics is elucidated by two kinds of code, we can see a lot of its applicability into contemporary discourses in general.
