Abstract

Aristotle, in his Poetics, clarifies that a tragedy, which imitates human actions, should excite fear and pity and produce its own pleasure, i.e. cleansing (katharsis) through them. The first principle and soul of tragedy, namely plot (mythos), which connects the events according to understanding (dianoia) and from reasoning (syllogismos), emphasizes Aristotle, must be composed in accordance with probability (kata to eikos). Probability, according to Aristotle’s discussion on modal logic and argumentations, is defined as an accepted (endoxos) proposition that is true for the most part and forms an enthymeme (enthyēma). mostly in relation to human actions. Despite often being omitted as accepted, it still supports the formation and persuasive power of an enthymeme. The characters whose actions a tragedy imitates, based on understanding and reasoning, are those who are, in fact, indifferent from us (the audience); anyone of certain quality performs an action of a certain quality in accordance with probability. Actions, if performed successively, form a series and unity through its start, middle and end in a modal aspect. Therefore, probability equips a series of actions with causality; without it, the series of actions is neither understood nor reasoned, the plot is not persuasive, and fear and pity are not excited in us. The argumentative role of probability is, in this respect, found in tragedy. Actions, particularly in a human community, are performed on causal grounds. Causes, in other words, drive human actions towards a proper, or accepted, way for communal life in the community. Actions without causes, though performed, do not lead us to any understanding or reasoning, and thus do not raise any sympathized feeling raises in us. Probability, according to which human actions should be performed, therefore, conveys in it the causes of actions. Such causes are no less than the social regulations and guidance of human actions. The ethical role of probability, in this regard, is also held in tragedy. By playing such argumentative and ethical roles, probability firmly sustains the nature of tragedy to be more philosophical and more serious.
