해방기 문학과 ‘신생활’ 담론의 역학

본고는 해방기 문학과 ‘신생활’ 담론의 역학을 규명하는 데 목표를 둔다. 해방 직후부터 남한의 엘리트와 정부 당국자, 그리고 이들을 주축으로 하는 각종 단체는 대중의 신체와 정신을 규율·계몽하기 위한 운동에 적극 나섰다. 특히 ‘신생활운동’은 식민지적/봉건적 과거와 신생국가 국민으로서의 미래를 대비시키며 신체와 정신의 건강성을 도모할 것을 강조했다. 또한 의식주 풍속 개선과 생활의 과학화, 공동체 의식 함양 등 개개인의 다양한 일상과 관념을 포괄한 생활문화 향상을 민족 번영을 위한 교두보로 상정했다. 본고에서는 생활 개선과 주체성의 상관관계를 다루고 있는 네 편의 소설을 통해 당대 문학이 신생활 담론을 어떤 방식으로 수용, 해석했는지 살펴보았다. 우선, 김일안의 「뺨」과 이은휘의 「황 영감」은 미군 주둔과 더불어 변화된 도시 거주민의 일상을 다룬 소설이다. 이 두 소설은 일제 시대 일본인 되기와 해방기 미국인 되기를 병치시키며 신생활의 맹점을 비판했으며, 외세 추종주의와 엘리트적 민족주의 양자에 거리를 두며 하층민 생활의 리얼리티와 목소리를 재현했다. 다음으로, 이석훈의 「문화촌」과 최요안의 「의사 없는 마을」은 농촌의 생산력 증가와 미신 타파 문제를 다룬 소설이다. 이 두 소설은 엘리트의 계몽 담론을 적극 수용하여 농촌의 과학화 및 의학의 적용을 해결 방안으로 제시했다. 그런데 그 과정에서 농촌을 미개함의 극단으로, 농민을 수동적인 존재로 고착화하는 고정관념을 재생산하고 있다. 이와 같은 사례들은 신생활에 관한 해방기적 상식과 감각들이 민족주의와 대중 혐오론, 아메리카니즘, 과학주의, 젠더정치 등 다양한 입장과 주의를 가로지르며 형성, 생산되고 있었음을 보여준다.
Abstract
The purpose of this paper is to verify dynamics of literature during the liberation period and ‘new life’ discourses. South Korean Elites, government officials and many organizations centering around them actively took part in the movement for regulating and enlightening of the public physically and mentally right after liberation. Especially, the ‘new life movement’ put emphasis on cleaning up the colonial/feudal past, providing against the future for people of a new country and promoting physical and mental health. Also, improved life culture covering diverse daily lives and ideas of individuals through improvement in food, lodge, and clothe, scientification of life and advancement in a sense of community was selected as a bridgehead for prosperity of the nation. This paper examined how literature of those times accepted and analyzed new life discourses, based on four novels revealing a correlation between life improvement and subjectivity. Firstly, <Bbyam> of Il-An Kim and <Hwang Younggam> of Eun-Hwi Lee describe daily lives of urban people that changed with presence of US Armed Forces in Korea. These two novels criticize the blind point of new life by juxtaposing being a Japanese during the Japanese colonial period with becoming an American during the liberation period. Moreover, these reproduce the reality and voice of lower class, keeping their distance from foreign power following and nationalism of elites. Next, <Munhwachon> of Seok-Hoon Lee and <A Town With No Doctor> of Yo-An Choi consider the increase in rural productivity and breaking of superstition. Being active in accepting enlightenment discourses of elites, these two novels suggest scientification of rural villages and application and medical science as solutions. But these reproduce a stereotype in that process by defining rural villages as the extremely uncivilized and farmers as passive characters. These cases show that the liberation period common ideas and senses of new life were formed and produced, crossing a variety of perspectives and norms, such as nationalism, the theory of public hatred, Americanism, scientism and gender politics.
