Abstract

This paper is an attempt to look into contexts in which diverse interpretations occur among readers as well as the process of formations of meaning, based on the data collected from readers’ comments and essays, and to find a guidance for appreciation education. Material studied is essays written by twenty-five freshmen on Kim Young Lang’s 「Like The Sunshine whispering on Stone Walls」. The analysis is focused on the phenomenon in which various experiences and knowledge put into mental space while reading texts are intertwined to produce meaning. Categories of deixies, conceptual metaphor, and conceptual blending are applied in the study. As a result, first of all, it was found meanings are differentiated according to categories of deixis of information and knowledge put into by the reader. However, a network where the reader connects information and knowledge was more important than the demarcation between categories. It is because the correspondence in the information of categories of deixis form a pivotal relation among meanings. Secondly, degree of cognition and cohesion of conceptual metaphor that change information into new conversation is found to have to do with emergence of meaning. Lastly, it was found that the information put into independently gives rise to the emergence of meaning, correcting the existing pivotal relation, and form new meanings, Considering that these three points cause diverse interpretation among readers, this paper suggests necessity of standard to design methods for appreciation education and to evaluate appreciation and interpretation.
