Abstract

Irony has become the major element of modern so as to perceive and shape the duplexity of modern society to be summed as the inner absurdity of world, the behind sidedness of surface and substance, and the distinguishability between statement and context. The readers as well as the poets must therefore have not only their insights to perceive this duplex context but their abilities to sense linguistically it. This is why the education of ironic poetry is needed. The difficulties of the education of ironic poetry at the present universities arise not only from the confusion of classifying the types of irony but from the ravel between irony and paradox. In this study to solve these difficulties, irony is distinguished conceptually from paradox that is discussed within the same category as irony only when the types of irony are classified. On this premise, the types of irony is reclassified with center in the utterable points and operative principles of irony coming from their texts. Firstly, the irony of oxymoron is characterized by the tensity occurring at the level of images and figures. Secondly, the irony as a counterstatement is characterized by the distinguishability occurring at the level of tones and narrations. Thirdly, the irony of dramatic turn is emphasized by the reversibility occurring at the level of events and actions. Finally, the irony as a poetic truth is emphasized by the paradoxicality occurring at the level of meanings and perceptions. As these four types are also educational models to explain the principles and functions of irony, this study tries to exemplify the analysis of ironic poetry by analyzing practically a poem.
