Abstract

Since Korea and China established diplomatic ties with each other, exchange between both countries is explosively increasing in various fields, including political, economical, social and cultural aspects. Currently, Korea’s religious activities in China are vigorously carried out, which is confirmed by the fact that the greatest number of Korean missionaries has lately been dispatched to China. The purpose of this paper is to inquire religions in Beijing, Korea’s religions in Beijing and mission accomplishment methods over a period from the China’s reform and open-door policy era until now, with the focus imposed on the period after the establishment of Korea-China diplomatic ties. Additionally, this paper aims to inquire serious challenges that Korea’s religions in Beijing face nowadays and goals to be achieved in the future, thereby assisting Korean culture that is attracting keen attention owing to the Korean wave (Hallyu: 韓流) to be disseminated and to be established in a more advanced phase. At present, Korea’s religions in China are growing in a Korean residents-oriented manner, rather than pursuing to rashly transplant Korean missionaries’ own religions to China. In fact, China was no better than a religiously unexplored field at an initial missionary work stage. Religions of Korean residents in Beijing, the capital city of China, although it is not any different from other areas of China, are more strictly supervised by the Chinese government and are required to more thoroughly observe the China’s positive law and national religious policies under the intensive control by the authorities concerned with religion and security. In particular, since China suffered a foreign-exchange crisis and hosted the 2008 Beijing Olympic Game, Korean religions in Beijing have been waning as a whole. In order for Korea’s religions to be settled down in China as a part of the Korean wave, it is necessary to move away from the existing rash mission work method without consideration taken into China’s special situations to a macroscopic, indirect mission work method. In addition, it is necessary for Korean religious sects to cooperate each other through networking.
