한국교회는 끊임없이 중국의 문을 두드리며 중국 선교에 대한 열정을 불태웠다. 지리적으로, 문화적으로, 그리고 역사적으로 서로 뗄 수 없는 불가분의 관계에 있는 가깝고도 먼 나라 중국선교에 한국교회는 3000명에서 6000명까지 선교사를 파송했다. 특히 1992년 8월, 한-중 수교와 베이징 올림픽을 중심으로 물밀듯 밀려오는 서구의 문화와 정치, 경제 패러다임의 변화를 통해 복음을 접하게 된다. 이에 중국 정부는 1989년 서구 민주주의와 기독교에 대한 강한 압박을 가하게 되는데 그 주된 내용이 중국 본토에 존재하고 있는 ‘가정교회’(house church) 탄압이다. 하지만 신실한 신앙인들을 말살하려는 중국 정부의 노력에도 불구하고 중국에는 1억 명 이상의 그리스도인들(가정교회 중심)이 있다. 베이징의 신앙인의 수는 1995년 이후로 거의 2배로 증가하였다. 이러한 상황 속에서 중국정부는 기독교를 조종하고 자신들의 목적에 맞게 변화시키기 위해 공산주의자들에 의해 1954년에 세워진 삼자교회 (the Three-Self Patriotic Movement, TSPM)가 중국의 공식 교회가 되었다. 삼자교회 리더들을 통해 접하게 된 왜곡된 복음은 결국 순수한 복음을 지켜나가고자 하는 가정교회의 거룩함을 해치게 되고 체계적인 신학교육을 받지 못한 교계 지도자들을 통해 중국에 뿌려진 복음이 세상의 가치와 희석되는 결과를 초래하였다. 결국, 중국의 기독교가 형성되는 시기와 상황을 정확히 이해하지 못한다면, 중국선교를 향한 한국교회의 투자와 노력에 상응하는 결과를 얻어낼 수 없기에, 본 소고는 1900년부터 1999년까지 중국 기독교의 형성에 대한 시대적 상황과 역사를 4 단계로 살펴보고, 21세기 중국선교를 위한 한국교회 효과적인 선교전략들을 제시하고자 한다.
