Abstract

In the Korean Peninsula, three types of falconry books were established in the premodern period, of which two were introduced to Japan in premodern times. The book that did not come to Japan was a text called Koraikohonyokotsuho. However, a change happened in the modern era (around 1930), and the Japanese in Korea began to be interested in Koraikohonyokotsuho only. The other two types of falconry books no longer attract the interest of the Japanese in the modern period. This paper focuses on Koraikohonyokotsuho, which caused a phenomenon in the modern era, and analyzes its content. Koraikohonyokotsuho is an important example that symbolizes the actual state of cultural exchange between Korea and Japan through falconry in the modern era. A clarification of the characteristics of this book may be necessary information for constructing a system of the history of falconry cultural exchange between the two countries. The analysis confirms that Koraikohonyokotsuho is based on Kokonjibunruiju (an encyclopedic book of China, which was popular in Japan in the premodern period). Finally, it was found that the cultural exchange between Korea and Japan through falconry in the modern era was an intellectual, educational phenomenon that originated from an academic interest in Chinese books.
