Abstract

This study examined the impact of using honorific words in ironic utterances directed toward seniors, focusing on the listener’s responses. Furthermore, the study also examined how the power relations shifted for each listener’s response. As a result, the listener’s responses were in the following order: aggression>defense, non-response>acceptance, and more than half of them were aggression responses. This suggests that in Japanese irony utterances, even if honorific words are used for seniors, the speaker’s negative attitude tends to encourage aggression rather than alleviate it. In addition, in the case of aggression and acceptance among the listener’s responses, the method of presenting negative attitudes in the speaker’s utterances that provoked them indicated some consistent patterns, however, in defense and non-response, there were no such patterns in the presenting the utterances. In this respect, the use of honorifics in ironic utterances for seniors has a context-dependent character in which interpersonal functions appear differently depending on the context. On the other hand, ironic utterances toward seniors can be viewed as a challenge to them, and the power relations may be shifted, maintained, or strengthened depending on the listener’s responses. Therefore, by analyzing the characteristics of each response from the point of view of power, it was observed that the movement of power occurred in the direction of the seniors to the juniors in the acceptance of the response, the power of the seniors in defense and non-response was maintained, and the power of the seniors in the aggression responses was strengthened.
