Abstract
This study examined the sequential mediating effect of depression and compulsive use on the relationship between FOMO and addiction in digital media. For this purpose, an online survey was conducted from May 1, 2022 to June 30, 2021, targeting 712 Japanese students studying in Korean University. The multimediated effect was verified using the PROCESS Macro model 6 of Hayes (2018). As a result of the study, first, it was found that FOMO showed a statistically significant positive relationship with addiction. Second, as a result of examining the mediating effect of depression on the effect of on-FOMO on addiction, university students’ depression was found to mediate the relationship between FOMO and addiction. Third, as a result of examining the mediating effect of impulsive use on the effects of university students’ FOMO on addiction, it was found that impulsive use mediates the relationship between FOMO and addiction. Fourth, the sequential mediating effect of depression and impulsive use was confirmed in the relationship between FOMO and addiction in university students. Therefore, we found that there was possible to identify various mediating effects through which FOMO affects addiction through depression and impulsive use, respectively, and through both depression and impulsive use. This suggests that various intervention programs are needed to alleviate and solve this problem.
