Abstract

The purpose of this study was to identify the mediated effects of loneliness and upward comparison in the relation between SNS addiction and psychological distress. To examine this hypothesis, the research model and the alternative model were compared. In the relations of SNS addiction and psychological distress, we assumed the sequential mediation of loneliness and upward comparison for the research model and the individual meditation for the alternative model. The participants of this study was 614 college students and the SNS addiction scale, the UCLA loneliness scale, the upward comparison scale and the psychological distress scale were used. The data analysis was done by using a structure equation model and the following is the results of the study. First, the research model assumed the sequential mediating effect of loneliness and upward comparison had better explanation of the data. Secondly, the sequential mediating effect of loneliness and upward comparison, the mediating effect of loneliness, and the mediating effect of upward comparison were significant in the relation between SNS addiction and psychological distress. Finally, the implications and limitations of this study were discussed.
