Abstract

This study verified the sequential mediating effect of self-concept clarity and fear of missing out in the process of university students’ social comparison orientation affecting social media addiction proneness. A survey was conducted with 295 university students to measure social comparison orientation, self-concept clarity, fear of missing out, and social media addiction proneness. The collected data were analyzed for correlations and dual mediation effects using SPSS ver.29.0 and PROCESS macro ver.4.2, with the significance of the dual mediation effects also tested. The research findings are as follows. First, social comparison orientation showed significant correlations with self-concept clarity, fear of missing out, and social media addiction proneness. Second, the relationship between social comparison orientation and social media addiction proneness among university students was found to be fully sequentially mediated by self-concept clarity and fear of missing out. These results provide a more detailed understanding of the psychological processes related to social media addiction proneness. Specifically, they suggest that interventions targeting students’ self-concept clarity and fear of missing out may be more effective than those focusing on social comparison orientation. Based on the findings, recommendations for future research and practical implications are discussed.
