<유충렬전(劉忠烈傳)>에 나타난 영웅에 대한 인식 연구 - 수용적 관점에서-

Abstract

This paper attempted to expand the understanding of the acceptance of <Yuchungryeoljeon(劉忠烈傳)> by supplementing the discussion on Yuchungryeol's heroism. In the past, Yuchungryeol's lack of heroic qualities was questioned. However, this paper noted that such an understanding of the shape of Yuchungryeol is not revealed in the characters inside the story world of <Yuchungryeoljeon>, and that it is an evaluation that can only be made on readers outside the text. Therefore, it was assumed that it was related to the reader's a priori evaluation of the hero Yuchungryeol. Therefore, I tried to discuss the structure of the <Yuchungryeoljeon>, which generates a negative evaluation of Yuchungryeol, and the resulting receptive value. <Yuchungryeoljeon> maximized the gap between external and self-awareness of heroic destiny, allowing the reader to take issue with Yuchungryeol's sincerity as a hero. This makes the reader realize that Yuchungryeol is in a double alienation. And It allows reader to face an unethical self who is not aware that ‘problem solving through the birth of a hero’ is based on someone's ‘sacrifice’. Through this, the reader pays attention to Yuchungryeol's 'personality' as an ordinary human being. The shift in perception of Yuchungryeol provides an opportunity to understand the tidal space, which was understood as a rite of passage for heroic awakening, as a resting place for Yuchungryeol. Meeting with Nanjing merchants, Kang Hee-ju's house, and Baekgwangsa Temple (meeting with old monks) can be seen as description of rational options such as ‘comfort from others’, ‘active defense against change’, and ‘relying on religion’. This can be understood as a result of reflecting Yuchungryeol's psychology as a being with a desire for self preservation. According to the above discussion, this paper believes that the bond between the hero and the reader through <Yuchungryeoljeon> can be strengthened. Furthermore, by expanding the existing discussion that has focused on the value of Yuchungryeol as a person who realizes the wishes of the people on behalf, I would like to emphasize the value of Yuchungryeol as a person who reflects on the collective coercion imposed on the hero.
