Abstract

This paper seeks to identify Lee In-seong’s first novel, Into an Unfamiliar Time, as a psychoanalytical narrative. Psychoanalytic narrative generally refers to a variety of psychological narratives dictated through free association. These narratives contain a mixture of probable metonymy and fantastic metaphors. And there is another psychoanalytical narrative that synthesizes the fragmentary fantasies of these narratives to express the universal symbolic system of mental phenomena. This paper analyzes the four narratives of Into an Unfamiliar Time in the order in which they were written. Through this, we explore how the narrative that began with the narrator’s free associations evolved into a complete psychoanalytical narrative that expressed the universal symbolic system of mental phenomena by deepening fantastical metaphors. Through this, this paper has three special insights: First, representative signifiers that appear repeatedly in Into an Unfamiliar Time will be explained in the context of Freud’s personality theory. It is revealed that these signifiers symbolize the elements of personality such as ego, id, and superego. Second, it reveals that the symbolic system of the narrative that these signifiers gradually embody expresses, as Lacan said, that human desire is a reflection of the desire of the Other. Third, we explore in detail how the symbolic system of fantastic metaphors that makes us aware of the desire of the Other operates in Into an Unfamiliar Time. As a result, this paper will be able to contribute to the development of a methodology for analyzing the so-called “language-structured” unconsciousness and desire.
