고대중국어 ‘제사’류 어휘 연구 — ‘祭’와 ‘祀’를 중심으로

제사는 인류가 神靈의 개념을 갖게 되면서 생겨난 원시적 신앙 활동으로, 고대 중국인들에게는 매우 신성하고 엄숙한 의식이다. 제사는 내부적 단결을 강조하며 일상적인 모든 것과 연계할 수 있었기 때문에 중국 고대문화 중의 중요한 요소로 자리매김하면서 각 시기마다의 전장제도 속에서 구현되었을 뿐만 아니라 언어문자에도 반영되었다. 이처럼 언어문자와 문화는 쌍방향의 互證 관계에 있으므로, 한자 어휘를 통해서 그 시기의 문화를 엿볼 수 있고, 해당 시기의 문화를 통해서 한자 어휘에 대한 정보를 확인할 수 있는 것이다. 본고는 ‘제사지내다’의 의미에서 유의관계에 있는 ‘제사’류 동사 ‘祭’와 ‘祀’의 자형 및 용례 분석을 통해 당시의 제사문화의 특징을 살펴보고, 동시에 두 한자가 담고 있는 제사문화의 특징 분석을 통해 두 동사의 의미상의 차이점을 밝히고자 한다. 아울러 상고시기와 중고시기를 대표하는 문헌상의 출현빈도수 분석을 통해 단음절어 ‘祭’와 ‘祀’의 시기별 주도적 지위의 변화에 대해서 살펴보고자 한다.
Abstract
Sacrifice is a primitive religious activity created by mankind, and It is related to the concept of gods. For ancient Chinese people, it was a very sacred and solemn ritual. The ancestral rites were not only implemented in the battlefield system of each period but were also reflected in the language texts. They were established as an important element of ancient Chinese culture, because they emphasized internal unity and could be linked to everything in daily life. Language letters and social culture are in a two-way relationship, the Chinese character vocabulary provides a glimpse into the culture of the specific period, and the culture of the specific period provides abundant information on the Chinese character vocabulary. This study investigates the characteristics of the ritual culture of the ancient time. By analyzing the types and examples of the verbs ‘祭’(ji) and ‘祀’(si) in the synonyms of sacrificial rites, we also find out some differences in the meanings of the two verbs. In addition, by analyzing the frequency of these two verbs appearing in the representative literature of ancient and Middle Ages, this paper studies the changes of the dominant position of Monosyllabic Verbs ‘祭’(ji) and ‘祀’(si) in different periods.
