Abstract
In the late Tang Dynasty, the poet Li Shangyin is renowned for his extensive use of classical allusions in his poetry. This paper examines the characteristics of Li Shangyin’s poems that utilize mythological allusions. In China, there is still no consensus on the definition of ‘myth,’ so this study focuses on the myths recognized as the starting point of mythology, particularly those included in the ‘Shan Hai Jing(山海經)’. Among the mythological allusions in his poems, references to goddesses are relatively prominent. Additionally, allusions to natural mythology such as Penglai(蓬萊), Xi He(羲和), and Fusang(扶桑) are also utilized. Chinese mythology has undergone transformations in its imagery over time, and both the original and transformed images appear in Li Shangyin’s works. Furthermore, Li Shangyin sometimes humanizes divine beings in his poetry, inverts the sanctity of myths to satirize divine figures, and creates new images by editing disparate myths together.
