숲 체험 활동이 지역아동센터 아동의 숲에 대한 태도, 스트레스, 자아존중감, 정신건강에 미치는 영향

저소득층 가정의 아동들은 그렇지 않은 아동들에 비해 높은 수준의 공격성, 우울, 위축 등 부적응 문제와 낮은 자아존중감 및 사회 적응력 등을 가지고 있다. 본 연구는 심리적으로 취약한 저소득층 가정의 아동들을대상으로 숲 체험 활동이 숲에 대한 태도와 인식, 정신건강 및 자아존중감, 스트레스에 긍정적인 효과를 보이는지 알아보고자 지역아동센터 아동 82명을 대상으로 1박 2일 숲 체험 캠프를 진행하였다. 이 결과 1박 2일의 숲체험 활동은 스트레스 호르몬인 코티솔 농도와 불안감을 낮춰주고 자아존중감과 숲에 대한 태도를 높여줬으며통계적으로도 유의하게 나타났다. 이는 숲 체험 활동이 지역아동센터를 이용하는 아동들의 스트레스와 불안을낮추어주고 자아존중감을 높여주는 등 높은 수준의 공격성, 우울, 위축 등 부적응 문제와 낮은 자아존중감 및 사회적응력 등을 가지고 있는 아동들에게 적합한 활동임을 보여준다. 따라서 지역아동센터 이용 아동 등 저소득층아동들을 대상으로 정기적으로 숲 체험활동의 참여 기회를 제공하여 정신적으로 건강한 삶을 영위할 수 있도록하여야 할 것이다.
Abstract
Children in low income families have higher levels of aggression compared to other children, maladjustment problems such as depression and shrinkage, and low self-esteem and social adaptability. In the present study, to examine whether forest activities of children in low income families that are mentally vulnerable show positive effects on their attitudes toward and perception of forests, mental health, self-esteem, and stress, a one night two days forest experience camp was held with 82 children at community child centers. According to the results, the forest activities for one night two days reduced the children’s concentrations of cortisol which is a stress hormone and anxiety while improving their self-esteem and attitudes toward forests and these changes were shown to be statistically significant. These results indicate that forest activities are suitable for children with high levels of aggression, maladjustment problems such as depression and shrinkage, and low self-esteem and social adaptability because the forest activities reduced the stress and anxiety of children that were using community child centers while improving their self-esteem. Therefore, opportunities to participate in forest activities should be periodically provided to children in low income groups including those that use community child centers so that they can lead mentally healthy lives.
