Teaching of German Literature through Translation - A case-study focused on Die Blechtrommel by Günther Grass

In this article will be introduced myseminar-course at the Department of German Studies of JEJU NationalUniversity: <Theory and Practice of Translation for teaching GermanLiterature>. The aim of the course, mainly based on textlinguistics andsemiotics, is cultivation of linguistic and cultural competencies fortranslator, in short, it is a goal-oriented curriculum. The teachingmaterials in this course include a renowned novel by Günther GrassDie Blechtrommel (1959; eng. trans. Tin drum by R. Manheim, 1961)and the other one by a new-generation writer of german contemporaryliterature, Daniel Kehlman, Die Vermessung der Welt (2005; eng. trans. Measuring the world, by C.B. Janeway, 2006). These two works arefull of historical events and literary esthetics as well as geographicaland mathematical knowledges, in particular, they make use of varioustexts for practical purposes (= Fachtexte), which is the reason, why I choose these works into consideration. As a conclusion of this paper will be proposed a general curriculum for teaching literature by means of linguistic tools, which also could be applied to other languages.
