Abstract

This study compares the lexical usage and structural patterns of Korean and Chinese presidential New Year’s Addresses. Both countries frequently use nouns and verbs to construct policy-driven messages centred on governance, national development, and economic goals. Inclusive pronouns such as ‘우리 (we)’ appear frequently in both texts, suggesting that both countries are striving to strengthen emotional connections and a sense of community with their audiences. However, stylistic differences are also evident. The Korean address favours intimate and direct expression, whereas the Chinese address emphasises collective and ideological unity. In addition, South Korea uses practical, people-centred vocabulary, whereas China tends to use abstract, national-vision-oriented vocabulary. Structurally, both countries employ a similar three-paragraph format: introduction, development, and conclusion. However, South Korea emphasises rhetorical proximity and national unity, while China stresses international inclusiveness and leadership. This comparative analysis reveals the strategic use of presidential discourse in both countries, with South Korea prioritising emotional exchange and community values, while China focuses on ideological narratives and collective aspirations. The lexical analyses in this study face certain methodological limitations due to the lack of a unified morphological analysis tool that can handle both languages simultaneously.
