Abstract
This study investigates the use and orthographic representation of foreign words in 《Poems of Jung Ji-yong》(1935), with particular focus on comparing the poems included in the collection to their original versions published in literary magazines. The research begins by proposing a broad and inclusive working definition of “loanwords,” deliberately avoiding strict distinctions between foreign words and loanwords. By compiling a complete list of 73 foreign lexical items found in the collection, the study identifies distinctive features of their phonetic transcription, including representations of fricatives, affricates, and long vowels, as well as variations resulting from indirect borrowings via Japanese. A diachronic comparison reveals numerous orthographic changes made during the revision of magazine versions into the final published collection. These include the addition or removal of emphasis marks, alterations in consonant representation, and shifts from phonetic transcriptions based on Japanese readings to those more faithful to the original language. The study considers whether such changes reflect the poet’s individual linguistic awareness or were shaped by editorial intervention and the evolving orthographic norms of the time. Ultimately, this analysis reveals Jeong Ji-yong’s distinctive linguistic sensitivity as a multilingual poet, highlighting how his strategic use of foreign words embodies a modernist aesthetic of estrangement and visual experimentation in his early poetic works. These findings also contribute to broader discussions on the history of Korean orthography and the cultural implications of foreign language adoption in modern Korean literature.
