21세기에는 전체 인구의 50% 이상이 도시에 거주할 것으로 예상하고 있는 가운데, 도시를 현대도시와 전통적 역사도시로 대별하여 경관상의 특징을 분석하는 것은 가능하다. 도시의 역사적 기원에 관계없이 현대적 도시는 세계화에 따라 변화되는 현대적 경관을 반영하고 있으며, 역사도시도 현대적 경관이 복합되어 나타나므로 현시적인 구별이 어려운 것이 사실이다. 그러나 세계화 과정 속에서 도시경관 변화의 배경이 되고 있는 정치·경제·사회적 변화를 반영하여 보면 현대도시에서 지속가능성을 염두에 둔 환경친화적 도시경관이 뚜렷이 나타나는 반면에 역사도시는 과거 부터의 정체성, 진정성을 반영하는 과거의 경관 단독이나 현대도시경관과 서로 조화 속에 과거경관을 보존하고 있다.또한 세계도시로 대표되는 현대도시에는 역사도시의 경관이 인공 환경에 녹아서 가시화되는 다양한 사례를 찾을 수 있다.
Abstract
Almost fifty percent of world population will reside in the urban areas, including both historical city andmodern city, in the 21st century. Although it is very difficult to make sharp division between historical cities andmodern cities, the townscape of both modern and historical cities has been transformed drastically in the era ofglobalization. The townscape of historical cities shows tendency towards conservation reflecting authencity and identityfrom the past in harmony with the modernized landscape constructed in the later period, while the townscape ofmodern cities represents the recent trend of world economic system in pursuit of the sustainability of environment-friendly townscape as well as contains representative built environment melted in the past tradition.
