Abstract
This paper focuses on the conceptual meaning of the region and regional identities in order to investigatetheoretical background, the emerging new definitions of various concepts in relation to the globalization discourse andidentity discourse, which provides the theoretical foundations of ongoing place marketing strategies in the regionaldevelopment. The conceptual meanings of region are quite different between traditional approaches and newclassification, whereas the latter places importance on the relation and openness in both the global and the localreflecting the globalizing world. Comparing traditional approaches with new regionalist approaches from literaturereview reveals newly emerging concepts such as spatial scale, network, place and space. The meaning of regionalidentity has been discussed from several perspectives including humanist, post-structuralist, institutionalist and so on.Moreover, the characteristics of regional identity have been layered out in flexibility and creativity, place marketing inrelation to tourism, cultural economy, and multiple-layer and multiple-dimension in time and space.
