Abstract

Transnationalism has become a key concept in explicating contemporary international migrants, especially their socio-economic networks and flexible cultural identities. Yet, recent celebration of subjects? spatial mobility and their aspatial networks have often downplayed how transnational migrants are conjoined and embedded in complicated socio-cultural relations in both home and hosting societies. Driven by theoretical problematic, this paper investigates potential dangers internalized in the concept ?transnationalism? and how human geographic perspective could contribute to explicating transnational phenomena. The first section of this paper examines the notion of transnationalism, approaches a wide range of transnational scholarship, and illustrates how it has been conducive to current migration studies. The following three sections focus on potential dangers imbibed in transnational studies, arguing it neglects diversity of transnational phenomena, heterogeneity of transnational migrants, national articulation of transnationalism.
