Abstract
This paper is to reconsider traditional relational theories in analysis of transnational migration, and to discuss actor-network theory as an alternative methodology for the analysis of transnational migration. Traditional theories or methodologies to approach transnational migration tend to be classified into 3 types, that is, action theory, structural theory and relational theory which attempts to connect those two types. The type of relational theory which includes social network theory, social capital theory, migrant networks theory, theory of migration system, and transnational migration theory has emphasized properly the connectivity between the levels of action and that of structure, but described somewhat ambiguously that connectivity and tended to use confusingly numerous terms to do so. To resolve these problems in traditional theories of transnational migration, this paper suggests actor-network theory, and explore its applicability to analysis of transnational migration, especially focusing on three groups of its important concepts, that is, actor-network, translation, and topological space.
