이 논문에서는 두 가지 작업을 진행했다. 첫째는 국민국가, 지구화, 초국주의,초지역주의 등 현재 도시와 경계 연구들에서 지속적으로 출현하는 개념들과연관된 몇 가지 해석의 문제들을 해명하는 것이다. 이러한 관심들은 국민과관리자로서의 역할이 점차 증대되고 있는 국가 간의 결합이 약화되고 있음에도 불구하고 국민국가에서 동시대인들의 생활은 여전히 그 땅에 기반을 두고있다는 사실을 인식하는 한에서 큰 효용이 있다. 둘째는 도시연구 분야의 문제들 특히 지역적인 것, 초지역적인 것보다 지구적인 것, 초국적인 것을 과장하는 경향에 대한 검토이다. 이동을 특권화하게 되면, 대부분의 사람들이 여전히 정주적인 생활을 보내고 있으며 이동하는 자들의 문제에 대한 해결은 정주하는 자들의 해법과 결합해야 한다는 사실을 무시하게 된다. 또한 지구도시 간의 상호연관성을 강조하는 경향은 도시들이 그 배후지들과 갖는 연관성을 무시하는 대가라는 점을 비판한다. 논의는 그 예증으로서 중화인민공화국에서 그 실례를 끌어낸다.
Abstract
This discussion undertakes two tasks. First is to clarify severalanalytical issues connected with concepts vocabulary that appearinsistently in contemporary urban and border studies: the nationstate,globalization, transnationalism, translocalism. These concerns areof great utility so long as they recognize the continued groundednessof contemporary life in the nation-state, even though there has beena weakening of the bonds between nation and state with themanagerial role the state has assumed increasingly. Second is adiscussion of problems in urban studies, especially a tendency toexaggerate the global and the transnational over the local and thetranslocal. The privileging of motion ignores that most people stilllead stationary lives, and the solution of the problems of those inmotion must be conjoined to solutions of those who are stationary. Especially important is the obliviousness in such studies to theproliferation of boundaries and even walls that constrain the motionsof many. Secondly, it criticizes a tendency to stress inter-global cityinteractions t the cost of ignoring the relationship of cities to theirhinterlands. The arguments draw on examples from the People’sRepublic of China for illustration.
