Abstract
The gated communities started from U.S.A. have sprawled into all over the world and become one of the globalization phenomena. This study focused on comparison of the gated communities between developed countries and developing countries. The results show that economy recovery in 1980s and speculative investment in real estate give rise to the gated communities in 33 nationwide. Most of the gated communities in developing countries including Republic of Korea have started from foreigner exclusive residence and their purposes and characteristics are very similar to those of developed countries, The types of the gated communities vary depending on national political and economic status. The ages, levels of income and education of their residents in developing countries are likely to be higher than those in core world.
