Abstract

This study reviews the spatial interactions between cities and others?regions in Latin America by measuring the degree of airline connectivity using the international air traffic data. It also tries to elicit the regional and social contexts related to international connection relationship of Latin America? cities. Latin America? cities have a strong tendency to be connected with North America? cities in the contexts of the number of airlines and travellers and such a tendency has continued. However, the spread of transactions between Europe and Latin America in the perspective of politics and economy has an effect on the increase in the number of international regular airlines and travellers. To analyze the international spatial interactions, Global Network Analysis (GNA) was performed. The results were as follows: the degree of connections between Latin America? cities was very low, but the degree of connections with North America and Europe was high. Especially, the degree of connections between North America and Central America? regions was very strong and such a tendency has continued. The degree of connections between European cities including Paris and Latin America? cities also increased due to increasing interactions between them. Mexico City was the most important central place of air traffic in Latin America? cities. The next places were Buenos Aires and Sao Paulo in South Latin America.
