Abstract
This study aims to investigate how modernization created urban landscape in the Islamic city, Fès, Morroco. Fès has a unique background in its formation of urban landscape because of its colonial experience and Islamic tradition. In particular, Fès is a characteristic Islamic city, which had experienced rapid urban restructuring under French colonial power. Started from double nuclei city around Fès River, Fes was called as Fes el-Bali in 8th Century Moulay Idriss dynasty. It later became triple nuclei city as a new urban center called Fes el-Jdid formed in Marinid dynasty. Throughout French colonial period, two new urban areas were formed 1) one by French residents and 2) the other by unplanned urban sprawl by massive incoming migrants. Together with the existing triple nuclei area, called as Medina, the two additional urban areas formed totally new triple nuclei city. Therefore, Fès can be considered as hybrid city composed of external French and internal Islamic components. Fès has been sustainable city, and canals covering all the urban areas account for its sustainability over time. A traditional Islamic system, called Habous, enabled separation between public and private affairs in urban planning.
