한국 근·현대 구상회화에 나타난 재현경관의 탐색 I: 서울의 공간 표상을 중심으로

구상회화 속 재현경관은 사람들이 공통적으로 느끼는 감정과 관점이 반영된 일반성과 보편성에 기반을 두고 있으며 구상화는 시대의 흐름에 따른 장소와 일상의 삶의 변화를 보여주는 기록물로 간주될 수 있다. 본 연구에서는 1890년대부터 2000년대까지 제작된 서울을 배경으로 한 근·현대 구상회화작품에 재현된 도시경관의 변화와 특색을 살펴보았다. 첫째, 대한제국기, 일제강점기, 한국전쟁기, 전후복구기, 산업화기, 탈산업화기 등 시대별로 역사적 사건과 사회적 변동에 중심이 되었던 서울의 장소들이 회화작품의 소재로 다루어졌다. 둘째, 북한산, 북악산, 한강 등의 자연지물과 경복궁, 경운궁, 비원, 서울시청사, 한강철교, 남산타워 등의 인공물은 서울의 대표적 랜드마크로서 시대 변천과 무관하게 서울, 즉 수도를 상징하는 공간 이미지 요소로서 일관되게 등장하였다. 셋째, 근대기에는 해외로부터 도입된 신기술과 양식을 보여주는 건축물과 구조물이 회화 속 두드러진 경관요소로서 등장하였다. 넷째, 1950년대까지는 서울의 고궁, 산, 강 등 대체로 한적하고 정적인 풍경들이 소재로 다루어졌으나 6·25 전쟁 이후 점차 일상적 삶의 공간으로서 판자촌, 유원지, 상점가 등이 등장하고 동적인 경향이 나타난다. 나아가 1980년대 이후 점차 선택적 시선에 의해 생략, 과장, 강조된 경관들이 나타나는데 서민들의 여가활동이 된 등산의 풍경, 교통체증이 빚어진 도심의 도로, 서민촌의 가옥 등이 강조되어 그려졌다. 구상회화작품들은 실제 장소의 이미지 영상과 도시문화정보를 제공해 주며 이는 장소의 문화자산으로서 스토리텔링을 통한 콘텐츠 개발로 이어질 수 있다.
Abstract
Multifaceted features and phenomena are expressed in figurative paintings, which are based upon individual artists' empathy towards places. Represented landscapes in paintings reflect the universality of the people'scommon emotions and perspectives. This study has explored the characteristics of urban landscapes represented in the Korean figurative paintings produced from the 1890s to the 2000s to fathom a dialectical relationship between society and space. First of all, places portrayed in paintings correspond to locales of Seoul where social issues develop during the eras of the Greater Korean Empire, Japanese colonial rule, the Korean War, the post-war recovery, and the economic modernization. Secondly, certain physical features and structures are depicted in paintings as representative landmarks of Seoul regardless of the changes of the times. Thirdly, paintings of the modern period have dealt with buildings and structures exhibiting new technologies and styles of construction as major components of landscapes. Lastly, the subjects of paintings have changed from the static features of palaces, mountains and rivers to the dynamic aspects of everyday lives including shantytowns, resorts, and shopping districts after the Korean War. Along with ordinary landscapes, the uniform appearance of row houses, diverse leisure activities of city dwellers and radical changes in land use have been dealt with as subjects of landscape paintings since the 1980s. As figurative paintings encompass the perceptible characters of places, they can be developed as a source of various information on local culture, which will help us appreciate the values of places and develop places' cultural assets through the process of storytelling.
