서남아시아에 위치한 두바이는 아랍에미리트 연합국의 7개 토후국 중 하나이다. 두바이는 중동과 북아프리카, 유럽 및 아시아를 연결하는 국제적인 금융, 부동산, 물류, 관광산업의 경제적 허브 역할을 담당하며 급속히 성장해 왔다. 2008년 말 미국에서 촉발된 금융위기로 두바이의 성장이 둔화되기도 하였지만, 두바이는 이슬람 도시 전통과 선진 도시계획이 접목되면서 포스트모던 도시로 거듭나고 있다. 또한, 가진 자의 폐쇄적 공동체와 가지지 못한 자인 외국인 노동자의 저급주거지 형성에 따른 주거지 분화가 확연히 드러나는 이원도시의 특성을 가지고 있기도 하다. 이 연구의 목적은 신흥선진국으로 성장하고 있는 아랍에미리트의 경제 중심지인 두바이의 도시공간구조와 지대별 경관을 고찰하는 데 있다. 두바이는 무역과 문화 및 자연환경으로 상징되는 전통적인 이슬람의 도시구조와 선진 도시계획의 구조적 융합이 도시경관에서 뚜렷이 나타나는 스펙터클의 도시이다. 따라서, 제3세계 국가의 도시 중 하나인 중동의 경제 중심지 역할을 담당하는 두바이의 도시공간구조를 연구하는 것은 급속히 성장하는 이슬람권의 저개발 국가가 겪을 성공과 위기요인을 도출하는 데 큰 의미가 있을 것이다.
Abstract
Dubai is one of seven Emirates in the United Arab Emirates located in South and West Asia. It has played an economic hub role inter-connecting MENA(Middle East and North Africa), Europe, and Asia in the fields of international finance, real estate, logistics, and tourism industries and has grown swiftly. Although Dubai has experienced the decline caused by the financial crisis triggered in the U.S.A., it has grown into a post-modern city by combining the Islamic city tradition and the advanced urban planning. Dubai also has a dual city characteristics revealing obvious residential differentiation followed by the formation of the gated communities for the haves and the deteriorated foreign labors’enclaves for the have-nots. The purpose of this study is to investigate the urban spatial structure and the landscape by zone of Dubai. Dubai is a spectacle city that shows the structural fusion between the traditional Islamic city structure and the advanced urban planning and that symbolizes trade, culture, and natural environment. Thus, it will be useful in that this study can elicit the factors of success and crisis targeting on the underdeveloped countries of an Islamic region experiencing rapid growth.
