Abstract
Shanghai is located in the mouth of the Yangtz river, and it is an economic central place of China and a global city in the world. Its growth has been confirmed by the locational condition of low land in the coast, hard industrial base, and positive policy for openness. Such a shiny growth symbolized as skyscapers have triggered a property boom that the land value has increased sharply. This study aims to examine the urbanization, urban systems, and urban spatial structure of so called as a global port city, Shanghai in China triggered by compact city development. Shanghai’s urbanization rate has entered into the terminal stage of 87.9% in 2016 and urban systems have transformed from two cores such as Pudong and Puxi to heterogeneous multiple ones composed of CBDs and several new towns. In Shanghai, three apparently different compact land use patterns have been created with the three road rings(inner ring/middle ring/outer ring) as well as boundaries have a characteristics of individual mixed land uses within the road rings. This study will be valuable to understand the development process and global city competitiveness of Shanghai having a role as a world center of finance, trade, culture, and logistics in the North and East Asia.
