본 연구는 장소가 지속적인 관계와 만남 속에서 지속적으로 만들어지는 역동적인 사건이라는 관점을 견지하면서 한인 이주자들의 유출입과 시간적 흐름에 따라 로스앤젤레스 ‘자바시장’을 둘러싼 장소의 사회적 구성과 의미 변화를 고찰해보고자 하였다. 로스앤젤레스 의류업계에 종사하는 한인들 사이에서 통용되는 ‘자바시장’이라는용어는 패션 지구 내의 특정 지점인 산티 앨리에서 시작되었지만 그 의미와 범위는 시간이 지남에 따라 변하고 있으며 지금 이 순간에도 끊임없이 재구성되는 과정에 있다. 이는 ‘자바 시장’이라는 도시경제공동체를 둘러싼 장소의의미가 고정된 것이 아니라 장소를 구성하는 주체들이 만들어내는 공간적 은유를 통해 관계 맺으며 재구성해 나가는 유동적인 것임을 의미한다.
Abstract
The purpose of this study is to examine the meaning of the place surrounding the Los Angeles ‘Jobber Market’ based on the viewpoint that a place is a social composition that is constantly being created in the constant relationship and encounter. The term ‘Jobber Market,’ which is commonly used among Korean Americans in the Los Angeles apparel industry, started at Santee Alley, a specific point in the fashion district. However, its meaning and scope are changing over time, and at this moment, the place of Jobber market is constantly under reconstruction and financial reorganization. This means that the meaning of the place surrounding the urban economic space ‘Jobber market’ is not fixed, but to be formed and reconstructed the relationship through spatial metaphor created by the subjects that make up the place.
