Abstract

This study analyzed the aspects of adjacency pairs, preference responses, and sequence organization in conversations between Korean and Japanese men and women in remake films to determine what these aspects express. First, the most common adjacency pair observed in both Korean and Japanese interactions was “question/response”, followed by “communication/response”, “explanation/response”, and “counter-question/response”. Regarding preference responses, it was found that Japanese men tended to use responses that considered women’s positions and situations, thus minimally harming women’s dignity. In contrast, Korean men used preference responses that openly expressed their emotions. In addition, Korean women tended to use non-preferred response forms directing dissatisfaction and criticism toward men, whereas Japanese women tended to use preferred response forms avoiding revealing personal feelings and accepted men’s counter questions to maintain the conversation. Lastly, in the sequence organization of both Korean and Japanese interactions, among the 38 comparable scenes, the post-sequence was the most commonly used in 17 scenes, followed by the pre-sequence in 12 scenes, and the insertion sequence in nine scenes. Pre-sequences are positioned before the base adjacency pair to understand the other party and prompt their response to proceed to the main topic. Insertion sequences involve another adjacency pair inserted immediately after the base adjacency pair to resolve misunderstandings and problems with the other party, thereby extending the sequence. Post-sequences create room for the conversation to extend further rather than complet the dialogue between the two individuals.
