한일 이성 간 첫 대면 대화의 화제에 관한 연구-화제제시방법 및 화제도입의 사회적요소를 중심으로-

Abstract

This study compares and analyzes the initial conversation between opposite gender native speakers from Korea and Japan. The analysis items were 'the way of introducing a topic' and 'the relevance to introduction of topic and social elements'. First, 'the way of introducing a topic' was largely divided into 'question' and 'self-presentation (self-disclosure)'. 'Question' was classified into 'direct type', 'terminal blur' (mid-end type), narrative type, consent type, and noun-end type. 'Self-presentation (self-disclosure) was classified into ‘opinion, experience, capability, situation explanation, personal information, feeling (emotion), preference, personality, memory, distress’. As a result of the analysis, the ratio of the Japanese males and females who started dialogue with ‘question’ was higher than that of the Korean males and females, while the ratio of the Korean males and females who presented a topic with ‘self-presentation’ were higher. Initial conversations between the Korean and Japanese opposite genders were characterized by the fact that Koreans usually presented a topic with a self-presentation, while the Japanese usually presented a topic with a question. According to the specific classification of 'question', it was found that the questions of terminal blur (mid-end type) from the dialogues of Japanese speakers. For instance, questions like “Uhmm… Where are you from…?” were twice as many as those from the dialogues of Korean speakers. Moreover, among the specific classification of ‘self-presentation’, the way of presenting a topic with ‘opinion (idea)’ was frequently observed in the dialogues of Korean speakers. The case of presenting a topic with ‘experience’ was frequently observed in the dialogues of Japanese speakers. Second, because males tended to introduce a topic in initial conversation between opposite genders, this study examined whether factors other than gender differences were significant in presenting a topic. In initial conversation between opposite genders, social factors such as age were not involved in the presentation of topics, and only gender factors such as males usually initiating topics in conversations than females were significant. This tendency seems to be the exclusive characteristic of the initial conversation between the opposite genders.
