Abstract
This study compared the structures of conversations between Korean and Japanese men and women in comparable scenes of remake dramas. It primarily investigates the roles of adjacency pairs and various sequence organizations (pre-sequences, insertion sequences, and post-sequences). The most frequent adjacency pair in conversations between Korean and Japanese men and women was identified as ‘statement/response.’ In Japanese conversations, a wider range of adjacency pairs was employed, resulting in more continuous sequences than those found in Korean conversations. Furthermore, the conversation sequences observed between Korean and Japanese men and women showed that Japanese sequences featured longer sequences and a greater variety of adjacency pairs compared to Korean sequences. Further, the research observed that in the conversations of Korean and Japanese men and women, the Japanese preference responses tended to continue the sequence by acknowledging and sharing the mood of the other person. Regarding the sequence organization in these conversations: 1) The pre-sequence is strategically positioned before the base sequence to guide the conversation towards the main topic. This pre-sequence is employed to elicit the other person’s speech, especially when inquiring about their intentions or transitioning to the base adjacency pair. A notable trend in these instances was the use of indirect and evasive responses, a conversational technique referred to as ‘hedging.’ 2) The insertion sequence, occurring immediately after the base sequence, serves to expand the overall sequence. 3) There are two types of post-sequences: non-minimal post-sequences, which further prolong the sequence, and minimal post-sequences, which conclude the sequence at the third position. Notably, non-minimal post-sequences do not serve to conclude the sequence between two people. Instead, they initiate the development of another sequence. In instances where the existing conversation between two parties was not satisfying and necessitated a shift in mood, the sequence was extended beyond the minimal requirement, moving backward to facilitate the continuation of the conversation. Furthermore, minimal post-sequences have been identified as a mechanism that extends the third sequence backward, thereby preventing the conversation between two individuals from concluding prematurely. In the conversations between Korean and Japanese men and women, these minimal post-sequences typically manifest as an additional, third adjunct sequence that extends beyond the initial base adjacency pair.
