Abstract

This paper analyzes the poetry criticism of Uchino Kenji (Arai Tetsu), pre-World War II poet, focusing on changes in his approach to poetry composition by decade. Uchino Kenji moved to Korea in early 1920, working as a teacher in Daejeon and Seoul, while publishing literary magazines and presenting his poems. After being expelled from the peninsula by order of the Korean Governor-General, he continued his literary activities in Tokyo as a proletarian poet under a pen name ‘Arai Tetsu’. To understand the poetry of Uchino Kenji (Arai Tetsu), it is essential to examine his poetry criticism. This study focuses on how Uchino Kenji's creative attitude toward poetry changed over time. It reveals a gradual shift in his poetry away from the influence of the “Minsyu Shi-ha (People's Poetry School)” toward socialist and proletarian poetry. Furthermore, after returning to Japan, he clearly established himself as a resistance poet and published antiwar poems. However, after being arrested and imprisoned, he published critiques that reexamined proletarian poetry in terms of its artistic value. This study reveals that he ultimately discovered a new literary path in the form of socially satirical poetry. Nevertheless, Uchino Kenji consistently believed that poetry is“something that captures the essence of human existence.” This study clarifies the process by which his practical expression methods of literary expression evolved based on this philosophy.
