Abstract

This paper focuses on resource sharing between subsidiaries in a diversified firm. There were few empirical studies considering resource sharing as an explicit variable even though it has been used as an underlying assumption for the performance difference of diversified firms in traditional diversification studies. The theories used in diversification studies can be classified into corporate- and business-level approaches, but either of them has its own limitations inherent in the level of analysis or in the matter of concern. The corporate-level research cannot identify business-level dynamics and, on the other hand, the business-level research emphasizes the necessity of resource sharing and ignores the possibility. There is also a conflict of logics due to a defective point of view that either a headquarter's or an subsidiary's interest is only involved. We intend to suggest an integrated logic to resolve the contradictory theories from the two researches. According to the empirical results, the corporate- and the business-level determinants are found to influence resource sharing, which proves either of the theories has the validity. The business-level determinants are also found to have an efficacy mainly in related diversification, which indicates the argument from the business-level research is applicable in a limited condition. The implication of the study is to complement the conflicting theories of resource sharing and to present various determinants to develope new logics.
