초록

본 연구는 국내 기업집단 소속 계열사를 대상으로 기업집단 내부시장 활용이 계열사의저성과 문제-전략변화 관계에 미치는 영향을 확인하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 본 연구는내부시장 활용이 계열사 수준의 재량권에 영향을 줄 것이며, 이에 따라 계열사 수준에서이루어지는 저성과 문제에 대응한 전략변화의 정도에 영향을 줄 것이라 주장한다. 2010년부터 2015년 사이의 국내 기업집단 소속 제조업 계열사로 구성된 512개의 기업-연도관측치를 활용한 실증분석 결과는 본 연구의 주장을 지지하였다. 구체적으로 저성과 문제와 전략변화 간에는 정의 관계를 확인하였다. 또한, 저성과 문제-전략변화 간의 정의관계는 상품·용역 거래가 증가할수록 약화되었고, 소속 계열사가 가진 해당 기업의 지분이증가할수록 강화되는 것으로 나타났다. 본 연구는 내부시장의 종류와 활용의 정도에 따라변화하는 재량권을 통해 기업집단 내 계열사들에서 관찰되는 저성과 문제-전략변화의차이를 설명함으로써, 기업집단 내부시장의 역할과 소속 계열사들의 전략변화에 대한선행연구들에 기여한다.

Abstract

This study examines how internal markets affect the performance problemstrategic change relation at an affiliated firm level in business groups. Based on a managerial discretion theory, we posit that internal market utilization affects the level of managerial discretion at affiliated firms, and thereby moderates the performance problem-strategic change relation. Using a panel sample of business group-affiliated firms in manufacturing industry from 2010 to 2015, we find that the performance problem increases resource reallocation. Also, such a positive relationship becomes weaker as internal product·service transactions increase, but such a positive relationship becomes stronger as the ownership of a focal firm that other affiliated firms hold increases. Our study suggests that managerial discretion varies according to the type of internal markets and the level of internal market utilization. Thus, our study contributes to the literature on internal market and strategic change in business groups.
