Abstract

This study explores the issues of decentralization between the corporate HQ and subsidiaries in the Korean diversified firms. The research is to find out the conditions under which each of the following three factors affects the degree of decentralization between the corporate HQ and subsidiaries: "needs" for decentralization, HQ's dependence upon subsidiaries, and bargaining power of subsidiaries. Major findings are as follows. First, subsidiaries with high level of resources would utilize their resources as a bargaining power to obtain the degree of decentralization they need from the corporate HQ, only when the corporate HQ is not willing to provide the degree of decentralization necessary for subsidiaries' competitive advantage. Second, there exists a high probability that the corporate HQ will determine the level of decentralization in accordance to subsidiaries' competitive strategy, only when the level of decentralization requested by subsidiaries is not inconsistent with the one necessary for the implementation of diversification strategy. Third, when the corporate HQ has the willingness to provide the level of decentralization required for the effective implementation of subsidiaries' competitive strategy, it is not probable that subsidiaries with high level of resources would utilize their resources as a bargaining power to obtain decentralization they need.
