Abstract
In this study, we focus on identifying the effect of network position and diversification of strategic alliance on firm performance in biopharmaceutical industry. first, as a result of examining the relationship between network position of strategic alliance and firm performance, we find that firms located at the center in strategic alliance network positively impact innovation performance, but there is no direct relationship with financial performance. In addition, there is no significant relationship between mediation location in strategic alliance network and corporation performance. Second, the degree of diversification in strategic alliance network has a statistically significant positive effect on innovation performance. However, the degree of diversification is not related to financial performance. It means that the purpose of the strategic alliance of biopharmaceutical firms is to discover and gain new technologies or drug substance for their product innovation rather than for their financial improvement. Therefore, the relationship between intra-diversification and innovation performance is also significantly related. Finally, we find the degree of inter-diversification has high relationship with financial performance. It means that irms have inter-diverse relationship of strategic alliance with other firms to improve their financial performance and profit. this results are expected to provides useful information to identify the determinants relevant to their performance when they decide alliance strategy of diversification in alliance network.
