Abstract

The purpose of this research is to examine how the symbolic words of it are being used in a spoken language corpus, . Korean language is great at symbolic words. The research on them have been done centering around a written language. Therefore, this is, by a measuring linguistic way, to look into the actual condition of the symbolic words of a spoken language objectively, which gains growing attention. As a result, they have different characteristics from the ones in a written language. The summary is the following. First, the frequency of using symbolic words in a spoken language is remarkably low. Therefore, the fact that Korean language is great at them is limited to a written language only. The reason is that the talkers share visual, auditory and tactual information in a real conversation. Second, it shows the frequency of symbolic words in a spoken language compared to them in a written one. Most of them with high frequency are monosyllabic words. Third, it is possible that using symbolic words reflects a talker's literary style. Fourth, it points out the unmarked problem in a coordinate vowel of symbolic words. Fifth, as a syntactic feature of symbolic words, it points out the relativity of the restriction of narrative words to the one of their position.
