Abstract
Units of linguistic research divide into 'phoneme morpheme word sentence paragraph text.'However, such classification is valid only for research on written language. Spoken language, structured real-time by participants' interaction, is less refined and is materialized in a more complex manner than is written language, which makes it difficult for us to discuss it only in terms of written language units. It thus requires research on units of spoken language reflecting its characteristics. In this study, as for units of spoken language, intonation unit was selected for utterance stage; turn constructional unit and adjacency pairs for interaction stage; and topic unit for discourse formation stage. Intonation unit is special information that a speaker expresses in linguistic format, which his/her consciousness focuses on at a given moment. The unit takes into consideration prosodic factors, such as intonation and pauses. Turn constructional unit is a unit structured when those engaged in a conversation take turns in speaking, which can be regarded as the beginning point of interaction between speakers and listeners. Adjacency pairs consist of words given by speakers and those taken by listeners based on the turn constructional unit, and serve as a unit that completes interaction. Adjacency pairs, unit of interaction, form a subtopic unit, and a subtopic unit forms a topic unit. This forms the beginning, body, and end part of a conversation, and finally forms a discourse. Post-adjacency pair units of discourse can be explained by stratification of topic units.
