한·영 완곡어의 대조 분석

The purpose of this research is to interpret the similarities and differences between Korean Euphemism and English Euphemism by comparing and contrasting. Euphemism means the use of mild or vague or periphrastic expression as a substitute for blunt precision or disagreeable use. The various use of euphemism by people in different linguistic backgrounds is discussed. The category is divided to euphemism with general human mentality and that with cultural distinctness. The example of former is subject related with death, pregnancy, excretion, and sex. Latter is argued between the categories of euphemism that is more developed in Korean and that is more developed in English. For example, there is euphemism that represents the disabled, the defaults and the characteristic of human, and elders. However, there lies difference between Korean and English in that euphemism related to tabooed subjects in Korean is not much developed, whereas in English, such subjects substituted into other euphemism are variously represented. This distinctness stems from different cultural backgrounds. In Korean society, Confucianism in which it is virtuous to not express shunned subjects influenced the euphemism. In English society, despite the influence of Puritanism that tends to ban direct expressions, the concepts lied behind free democratic society created a variety of euphemism that replaced such expressions In addition, through the methods of shape, function, figure of speech, and metonymy etc, the concept behind the background of naming is represented.
